(1 June 2001) This is an annotated listing of links to galleries, museums, art organizations, and artists collectives in the Chicago area, which deal with the visual arts, including photography. Sites of individual artists are not listed.
Comment for the year 2001
After five years of searching out, compiling, and reviewing Chicago area art related web sites, and insulting everyone in the process, we are throwing in the towel, and turning all of this over to an automated script.
The links are still provided as a resource, but you will have to use your own judgement at the likelyhood of delights and surprises, or being bored to tears, falling asleep at the mouse while waiting, etc.
Flashback
We started these pages in 1996 with the original purpose of locating and commenting on Chicago art resources at a time when no-one else was able or interested in doing this. Typically, an art web site at that time would provide links to the Louvre and the Prado -- but nothing locally. We found and reviewed about 40 sites in 1996.
During the next five years the number of sites grew, and there was plenty to grouse about, as new site after new site hired high school kids with a copy of Kompozer to create their web pages around the design principle that any web site should instantly remind you of all other sites. By 2000 we had 125 sites to look at.
Things look much better this year. Many of the crayon and construction paper web sites have seen a makeover, and the Designer Black Background is seriously on the wane, proving that it was indeed a genuine Newbee index. Java Script mostly remains at the nuisance level of cockroaches, although still adding bulk around the middle of many sites.
The Current Plan
Now that everybody is using professionals, rather than high-school students, there is no longer the need for our snide remarks. So an automated script will do the analysis this year. Here is what you will get ...
- The "title" tag as supplied by the web page.
- The "META description" tag. And if there ain't one, then "none."
- The URL, mostly as the domain followed by a slash.
- The size of the opening file.
- The amount of the opening file as text.
- The number of images and links of the opening page.
- The various strangler tags found.
- The total site in bytes, and the number of files.
See "Techno Babble" below to find out what all this means.
The screen shots are taken on a 640x480 screen. Some pages do not fit this minimum standard.
If the machine generated comments stand to be corrected, send comments via [eMail], and our spider will make another visit.
Feel free to suggest new sites for addition to this list. The site can be anywhere (like in California or Finland), but the content or artists need to be in or around Chicago. We don't list individuals.
Send site URL's via [eMail]. Unlike as in previous years, and what with machines doing everything except writing this introduction, it should be easier to update things.
Techno Babble
The entry "title" is from the HEAD section of the opening file of a site. Since it is used for bookmarking by browsers, titles like "welcome" or "untitled" don't get much replay.
The entry "META description" was gathered the same way. Some sites included unexpected blank spaces in the META tag, and were awarded with "none" even though this is not so. We rewrote the script, and will check back later.
Three pieces of information about the opening file are listed, which easily is an indication of what to expect.
- If listed, the file size of the opening page. If small it is either the start of a Frame set, or some click through counter. The opening page file size does not include the untold images your browser might be asked to also download.
- The percent of the opening file as tags and as text. A opening page with 40 to 60 percent text will be of some use. Pages approaching 99 percent tags are likely to be laden with mouseovers and other Java stuff or cute Flash displays. May not be worth your time if you are looking for information.
- The number of images and links on the opening page, and a number of recognized forms like Frames, Image Maps, etc. If you know what these are you can form your own opinions on the suckyness of the site. Be warned though that often the starting page may be useless, but lowed level pages may be more respectable.
The last piece of information, the size of the site and number of files, were (at first) gathered with wget, acting as a spider. We forced skipping all file extensions except jpeg, jpg, and gif, but, even so, getting all the normal image files was just too time consuming.
Starting soon (as soon as we get a Perl bot written) we will only get the text/html files, extract the image links and do head calls to the server. That will get statistics generated in seconds rather than hours. We will not ascend directories or span machines.
Ruminations
The problem with professionals, just to continue the above discussion, is that they are harried rather than dedicated (as you would expect of high school students).
Harried professionals will need to prove only once to their employers that they have created a glitzy web site by showing the results on their employer's machine, and after that will only be bothered with accasional updates.
Web sites suffer with a lack of dedication (a lack of thoughtfull time), for it takes infinite small tweaks to make a page come alive and fit comfortably to as many viewers as possible. A viewer might be astonished and delighted the first time she gazes on some brilliant opening page which splays full color chords of moving images, constructs a stage plank by plank, and then drops a one-act play onto the screen. But that same viewer is going to curse the designer the 10th time that she has to endure the opening opera.
Nuff said. That still leave three items to be addressed by us, first mentioned last year, those of formulating indices for access, speed, and navigation.
- Access
Access by viewers with disabilities has been largely sidetracked by the net community. A perusal of official sites seems to indicate an effort to avoid insulting other standards makers like the W3 org or browser sellers. Reliance on ever higher technology (and cost) is tauted as the solution. This includes, currently, an extreme faith in CSS, even though most web page creators have barely learned the basics.
CSS is not the answer to allowing viewers to adjust type sizes and fonts to their visual needs. Neither are ALT tags a substitute for texts presented as image file. Image maps are death to a website when a blind person attemps to access information. Yes, we know blind persons who cruise the internet. And a lot of folks who can't see well.
- Speed
Speed of a website is still related inversely to image file sizes, but as viewers we judge the speed of a site by the time it takes to splash an opening page onto the screen. Having 150 gif files which have to be fitted to the page, or a giant image which just has to be there, does not induce a feeling of speed.
- Navigation
If we can navigate with Lynx, the site will pass. But navigational finesse is more than the use of a logical system.
The warning, "your browser does not support frames," is wasted on Lynx, since it navigates frames with ease, especially if a single index and a main target are used. But often frames become decorative borders to a page. Very few sites provide a jump to the main frame as the alternative "no-frames" page.
Image maps are again the end of the road, but that is true for many graphical browsers also. Long tables can be a real drawback to making sense of web pages, since Lynx presents them column wise, and a long repeating left column which appears on every page will get in the way of seeing anything different when you move to another page.
All this still requires looking at the sites, which automated scripts do poorly. We'll work on it some more this year. If you have any comments with regard to access, speed, and navigation, be sure to [contact] us.
